Medium Silicon Carbide stone is a bonded abrasive stone designed for removing larger amounts of metal during the sharpening process.  Use to develop a new edge or repair a heavily damaged one.  Stone can be used alone or used as a replacement for oil bath sharpening systems needing new stones.   
 
The medium silicon carbide is not as abrasive as the coarse grit, but will still remove metal quickly to reform edges or repair damaged blades.  For most knife sharpening the medium grit is plenty coarse enough to handle your needs.
